9 Movie Scenes You Didn't Know Had A Guest Director

8. Don’t Walk Away - Xanadu

Xanadu is unique amongst these films, as the guest directed scene was added in post production rather than as a natural part of the filmmaking process.

Electric Light Orchestra had created all the music for the film, but once shooting wrapped they requested their new song ‘Don’t Walk Away’ be added in. As studio heads are wont to do, they agreed to this without checking the logistics of it.

By the time the deal had been signed, it became apparent that there was no place for the song to fit. With the actors now involved in various projects, getting them back for a new scene would be too expensive (not to mention disrupt the narrative), so it was given to animation expert Don Bluth to create a link up scene to the tune of Don’t Walk Away.

However, the drama still wasn’t over as Bluth was also directing animated feature The Secret Life Of NIMH. He was given 12 weeks, so had a skeleton crew of animators working with him 12 hours a day, seven days a week in his garage while the rest of the studio worked on NIMH and communicated by phone.
