Before Westworld came to television, a potential big screen remake of Michael Crichton's 1973 SF western was on the drawing board of producer Joel Silver, with an eye to making it an Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle.

In 2007, following the high-profile commercial failure of Grindhouse, Tarantino admitted that studios (clearly hoping the director was jonesing for an easy hit after such a notorious flop) reached out to him with major projects - and Westworld was among them.

While Tarantino agreed to read the script, it doesn't seem that he ever seriously contemplated taking the project on - leaving the path clear for Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy to radically rework the property for HBO.
