9 Ways The Batman V Superman Trailer Proves The Movie Will Suck

9. A Totally Generic Introduction (To An Interesting Idea)

OK, here we go - Batman V Superman's first teaser. How is Zack Snyder going to open the big trailer for his new movie? A taste of the titular battle? The introduction of Ben Affleck's Batman? Nope, it's a slow zoom on a CGI city with lots of voice-overs doling out exposition mixed with vague philosophical ideas. Oh, haven't seen that before. The basic idea is that people aren't the biggest fan of Superman after he killed half of Metropolis a couple of years back. That tact is rather smart - the destruction caused by Superman in the climax of Man Of Steel is just so catastrophic that treating him like an unequivocal hero is pretty insulting - but it's delivered in such an obvious way. That seemingly betrays that it's only a key plot point because the critics were so vocal after the first film to ignore it (like they did in the finale of Man Of Steel) would only create only more negative buzz. The old "show, don't tell" mantra doesn't have to be applied to trailers as strictly as the finished films - they're advertising snapshots, not a refined product - but is there really nothing from Dawn Of Justice that they could have used instead to build hype than the verbal equivalent of an expositional news report taking up a good half of the trailer's run time?
