Some say that the best barometer for a film's success is not the box office popularity upon release, not the reviews of critics, not the amount of awards and Oscars it wins or even how the film beds itself into the popular culture of the time. The true test, some say, is the test of time. This is why the 20/20 Awards are so smart and fun and in its own way, significant. The awards ceremony is something of a revisionist one, they reflect back on a year in film some two decades later with the benefit of hindsight, to see what movies and performances really were the best from a particular year. This is the 3rd time the 20/20 awards have taken place and the winners were announced last week at Seattles Central Cinema and incredibly as many as 8 AWARDS were given the 'Felix' statue that were also given an 'Oscar' in 1992. Yes my friends, it looks like the Academy got it right back in 1992 when the Oscars were given out without the scrutiny of the internet! Silence of the Lambs once again took the 4 award clean sweep of Best Picture, Best Director (Jonathan Demme), Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins) and Best Actress (Jodie Foster). I still have the niggling feeling that for all its inaccuracies and audience manipulation, Oliver Stone's masterfully put together JFK could well be argued to be the film marvel of that year. But anyhow, here are the full list of winners. Oh and if you are wondering it was Jack Palance in City Slickers who wrongly won Best Supporting Actor in 1992 (Goodman wasn't even nominated in 1992 but Michael Lerner was for Barton Fink) and Best Actress went to Mercedes Ruehl for The Fisher King (Geena Davis was Oscar nominated but in Best Lead Actress along with Susan Sarandon for Thelma & Louise).
