With the 90th Academy Awards just around the corner, film buffs are readying themselves for the big night by catching up on any nominees they might've missed...but mostly just complaining about their favourite movies which got "snubbed."

Though the Academy has made a concerted effort to be more diverse and open-minded with its nominations in the last decade - after the Oscars were torn a new one for snubbing The Dark Knight in most major categories - this year's slate of nominees demonstrates they still have a lot of work to do.

With the average age of an Oscar voter being 63, there's clearly a bias towards a certain type of movie, at the detriment of more contemporary and bleeding edge cinema which may clash with their stubborn ideals about what an Oscar film should be.

With several of 2017's most acclaimed movies, both blockbusters and art-house hits, being left off the nomination slate, it's time to right the Academy's wrongs by running down every major category, selecting our own field of nominees and then an ultimate winner.

Of course, not every great movie can get nominated, but the Academy proved this year that, while it's making baby-steps towards being more relevant, it still needs to shake loose the cobwebs to feel truly in-touch with audiences at large...
