Andrew Garfield has landed the starring role in Under the Silver Lake, a new thriller from David Robert Mitchell.

Director of the hit horror film It Follows, Mitchell's new film will be set in Los Angeles, and The Hollywood Reporter notes that it will bea modern-day crime noir.

Mitchell will be writing the film as well as directing it, while Michael de Luca is producing along withChris Bender,Jake Weiner, and Adele Romanski.

It Follows was a real breakthrough for the director, coming after his debut feature The Myth of the American Sleepover. It marked him as someone to keep an eye on, so it'll certainly be interesting to see how Under the Silver Lake progresses, with no other films currently on his slate.

As for Garfield, meanwhile, he's already been Spider-Man, but his career could go to another level this year, at least as far as dramas are concerned. He recently appeared in 99 Homes, alongside Michael Shannon, and will next be seen in Mel Gibson's World War 2 film Hacksaw Ridge, and then Martin Scorsese's Silence, which will focus on the persecution faced by two 17th Century priests in Japan, and could well bring him some awards season attention.

There's no word on a release date for Under the Silver Lake, but production is expected to get underway at the end of the summer.
