Andy Serkis: His 8 Best Performances

6. Captain Haddock (The Adventures Of Tintin)

If you haven't seen The Adventures of Tintin, you should do that. Immediately.

The Spielberg-directed, Peter Jackson-produced, Edgar Wright-written film is an absolute delight that plays like a hyper-stylized, motion-capture medley of Indiana Jones and Paddington. And as one would expect, amidst a cast full of motion-capture actors, Serkis is the one who really stands out.

As Captain Haddock, Serkis is a down-on-his-luck, perpetually-drunk captain who gets caught up in Tintin's big adventure. In the role, Serkis gets to riff a lot and it is very much to the film's benefit. His off-the-cuff performance is so electric that the character practically comes to life before your very eyes.

One of the real strengths of this role is in how it showcases Serkis' gift for physical comedy. As cemented by his reputation as the legend of motion-capture acting, Serkis has an almost unnatural control over his body movements. He can inhabit the world of a talking monkey or that of a nefarious hobbit, so seeing him put that kind of ability to work for the purposes of comedy is genuinely great.

Sequences like Haddock having to fuel a plane engine as it is mid-flight or him becoming miserably depressed at the realization that he's sober work so well and are so funny specifically because of Serkis' incredible performance.
