Another L.A. Confidential movie in the works?

laconfidential.jpgOk bare with me, because things are starting to get a little confusing here. We already know about White Jazz, the forthcoming Joe Carnahan movie with George Clooney that is adapted straight from the James Ellroy novel of the same name, which is a non-direct sequel to the awesome L.A. Confidential..... as although some characters will be reappearing (no word on if they will be played by same actors) it won't have any relation to the last movie. So far, so good. Where things get confusing, is that Moviehole today are reporting that Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce who are the stars of the original movie, are in talks to reprise their roles for L.A. Confidential 2. The original's director Curtis Hanson and writer Brian Helgeland are said to be in talks with the following coming from TMZ.... "Insiders tell TMZ that the Curtis Hanson and Brian Helgeland sequel being discussed wouldn't rely on the plot of White Jazz, but simply pick up where L.A. Confidential left off: With Lt. Ed Exley (originally played by Guy Pearce), a rising star in the LAPD, and Officer Bud White (originally played by Russell Crowe), now an ex-cop who lives with an ex-whore." So let's break it down. We get White Jazz, a non-direct sequel written by the book's author which has some of the same characters AND a different movie that is a direct sequel that picks up where the first movie left off, but isn't written by the books author! Ok, I think I understand now. Filmstalker are reporting that Carnahan has commented on his blog saying that the screenplay for White Jazz is having to go through some changes as the names of the characters from L.A. Confidential are no longer allowed to be used with this other movie in the works. Two movies set in James Ellroy's world with the talented Curtis Hanson and Joe Carnahan at the helm? Not only that but one with George Clooney and the other with Crowe and Pearce? Hell yes! Let's hope everything goes smoothly on both projects from here! source - moviehole, tmz, filmstalker, carnahan's blog
