It was revealed well over a year ago that Aquaman had found an actor to play villainous Black Manta, with The Get Down's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II landing the role of Arthur Curry's nemesis David Kane (known as David Hyde in the comics).

Black Manta is the biggest Aquaman villain from the comics, who frequently goes up against the Aquatic Ace in a battle to take control of Atlantis, and it sounds like we might see some aspects of that here, with James Wan describing the character as:

"He’s part mercenary but full-time pirate who in his suit will look like some crazy alien from outer space."

Speaking of the suit, EW have unveiled the first image of that taking shape, showing Kane working on the helmet, which is very much comic book accurate. The suggestion here, then, is that Manta will have an important role here, but is also being established for future appearances as the main villain too.
