One of Endgame's home video featurettes delves into the development of Captain America: The First Avenger and the unexpected course it set the superhero on, culminating of course with the release of Endgame.

And naturally, we hear from screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who have penned almost every single Cap-starring film in the MCU: all three Captain America films as well as both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

Markus said of the early days of their collaboration, "When we were talking to [Marvel Studios], they had two movies out. And so the idea that, 'No, this is going to build into a giant, ongoing, interconnected universe', was like, 'Uh huh. Yeah, sure. Of course it will. I have no doubt.'"

It's laughable to consider their doubts almost a decade after they signed on to write The First Avenger, but given that nothing of this scale had ever been attempted prior to the MCU - at least successfully, anyway - it's easy to see why even they were rather skeptical.
