You could have understood if Marvel had chosen to release their next trailer for Avengers: Endgame the second Warner Bros released their next Shazam! trailer, to pay them back for dropping the review embargo just as the first Captain Marvel screenings kicked out. You could sanction that sort of pettiness, but that's not Marvel Studios' style, apparently.
Instead, without the same weeks of pretend-insiders on Twitter speculating on the release date and claiming they've been told, the second main trailer (that Super Bowl teaser didn't really count) landed today without the usual fanfare. And boy has it made an impact!
Going heavy on emotion and offering a fair amount of new material, it's an incredible hype-builder that offers new revelations, poses new questions and should get paces racing even more. You know, after that harsh reminder of how we got here. This is Marvel shouting "strap in, everyone, this is going to be a RIDE!"
Here's the trailer in all of its glory...
First the negatives...
2. The Iron Man Spoiler
It's all well and good saying that we'll only see footage from the opening act of Endgame in the trailers to preserve trailers, but it's sort of undermined when there's a great big spoiler in there in one of the trailers anyway.
Now, there's probably a very small percentage of people who believed that Tony Stark was going to die when he's stranded in space with Nebula on the Benatar. He has a major role to play in Endgame after all, and as much as Marvel increasingly like surprises, killing him in the first act would be a step too far. But that was still the major story of the first trailer and you have to consider what it means to mainstream audiences to see that and then to have it resolved in a second trailer when he turns up back with his team.
It just seems like a slightly unnecessary reduction of the drama from that first teaser.
