Avengers: Infinity War SHOULDN'T Have A Post-Credits Scene

Time to break the mould.

Let's go back 10 years: the credits have rolled on Marvel's Iron Man, the studio's first feature film in a planned cinematic universe. It wasn't enough to simply end on Robert Downey Jr's "I am Iron Man though", with a stinger for anyone who stuck through the credits: Tony Stark returns home to find Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury in his mansion, who tells him he's part of a "bigger universe" and about something called the Avengers Initiative.

Marvel didn't invent post-credits scenes, but they have utilised them better than anyone else, with those early films continually laying breadcrumbs for the future. Since then they've expanded their scope to include at least two scenes in every movie - one mid-credits, one post - with a mix of future planning and joke telling (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 even had FIVE of them).

A decade on, then, and the world is gearing up for Avengers: Infinity War, the beginning of the end for the MCU and the biggest superhero movie ever made. There's already tonnes of speculation about what a post-credits scene might include: Captain Marvel setup, an Ant-Man and the Wasp tie-in, the Soul Stone, another trip to get some shawarma. The list goes on. But, really, Avengers: Infinity War could do with skipping the mid- and post-credits scenes altogether.

Infinity War isn't just another Marvel movie, but is (along with Avengers 4) the culmination of the past 10 years of movies, of storytelling, and yes, of credits scenes. The stakes are higher, the sense of dread more palpable and, unlike in previous movies, there's a real chance we're going to be saying goodbye to at least one of the biggest heroes.

The movie - and indeed the past 6 years - have been building to Thanos collecting all six Infinity Stones, placing them in the Infinity Gauntlet, and wiping out half the universe with a snap of his fingers. It's not just something that could happen in this movie, but absolutely SHOULD happen - and that kind of moment really needs to linger. It shouldn't be undercut with a scene from a new movie or a gag.

The ideal, then, is that Thanos completes the Gauntlet, snaps his fingers, and... fade to black (perhaps, if you like, with a quick sign of life been wiped out). It'd be ballsy, shocking, and quite brilliant, and ensure everyone's talking about Infinity War and Avengers 4, rather than, say, Captain Marvel. In place of a post-credits scene, you could still reward those who stick around - because even if Marvel made a huge announcement saying IW doesn't have one, some will wait just in case - with a different kind of reveal: 'The Avengers will return in... AVENGERS 4 TITLE!'

It's in keeping with their ethos of setting up the future and planning down the line, while ensuring that fans are still suitably floored by what they've seen in the movie, while the title itself will presumably feed into the speculation of what comes next. We've seen so many MCU post-credits scenes by now - some superb, some hilarious, some surprising, some just bad - that it's hard to think of one that would top the way Infinity War should go out, and with this highlighting that the MCU as we know it is coming to an end, it's a perfect time for them to break the mould with the post-credits scenes.
