Batman: Gotham By Gaslight Review - 5 Ups & 5 Downs

A totally mixed bag.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is Warner Bros' latest major animated Batman movie, arriving on a decidedly more muted wave of hype than recent DC animations such as The Killing Joke and Batman and Harley Quinn, but also undeniably benefiting from some sensibly lowered expectations.

This latest offering is an unquestionably mixed bag, with its frustratingly low-fi production and now-obligatory slew of eyebrow-raising moments, but it does also present fans with a distinct new vision for the Caped Crusader, and benefits from some game vocal performances in the bargain.

If you've been deterred by the dubious, troubling depictions of women in recent DC animated movies, then Gotham by Gaslight might be a good point at which to rejoin the party, because the end result is far more consistent and less insulting than the recent aforementioned disappointments.

Just don't go in expecting a classic to stand alongside Mask of the Phantasm and you'll be fine, basically...
