The reboot for Batman – set to hit theaters in either 2016 or 2017 depending on what rumors you believe – is going to the most anticipated reboot in cinema history. Why you ask? Because it’s restarting a franchise that’s recently been recognized as one of the greatest film trilogies ever made.
The Dark Knight Trilogy, as a whole, is on par with the Godfather Trilogy and the Star Wars Episodes IV through VI. And that’s because Christopher Nolan did a great job developing Bruce Wayne. His films took a deep look into the man behind the mask. The psychology of Bruce was taken heavily taken into account.
But another aspect that Nolan utilized masterfully was the villians. Whether it’s the daunting allure of Ra’s Al Ghul, the anarchistic madness of The Joker, or the ruthless but militaristic brilliance of Bane, Nolan’s villains were, essentially, what made the trilogy great. As cliché as it sounds, a hero is only as it good as its villain. The reboot must include villains that haven’t been addressed yet in film or whom haven’t been addressed properly in film.
Additionally, the actors who portray these roles have to be decent. Liam Neeson is Ra’s Al Ghul. He had the look, demeanor and attitude of the leader of the League of Shadows. Heath Ledger created a Joker has already impacted other cinema villains today. Tom Hardy as Bane was absolutely brilliant. Being able to act and evoke such raw emotion with only your eyes is an achievement.
This reboot needs that same acting prowess and ability. Here is my list for 10 essential villains for the Batman reboot and who should play them (within the contents of a trilogy).

Great article tho i would have to go with Rose McGowan for Harlequin. Not sure about Christophe Waltz for the Joker either. Adrian Brody maybe?
Some very inspiring choices amigo!Waltz as Joker! You should be a casting director. Additionally, Toby Jones as the Penguin! Woa! I would consider a difficult role for Harley Quinn as I consider currently that no one can portray her. Who could have psychopathic tendencies but at the same time remain all cutie-pie (and having an incredible physical body)? I am not sure that Amanda can pull that off as a) she is too young b) she looks too young! But damn I could watch Batman movies all year. He has faced by far the most creepy and disturbing villains of all time but happened to be … more human than others (See Galactus, Dr Doom, Green Goblin etc).
I love Christoph Waltz as the Joker…HOWEVER. It wouldn’t be Nolan’s joker and I think TOO MANY people would inadvertently compare him to Heath Ledger, no matter what, which would already tarnish many people’s perception and potential to like see Christoph in the role.
Adrian Brody as the joker is completely lazy, and what I’d like to call “face casting.” Adrian’s open eyed expression does not equal great acting….He has such limited range.
Shouldn’t they make the next trilogy more supernatural after the realism of Nolan’s trilogy? Maybe Poison Ivy or Clayface? Love your choices for Harley Quinn and Joker though!
Shouln’t the next trilogy be more fantasy after the realism of Nolan’s trilogy? like maybe Poison Ivy or Clayface? Love your choices for Harley quinn and Joker though!
Some really great choices, especially Hush, Joker and Harley Quinn.
The Hush story I think would work well as the first film, as it could add an extra layer to the re-telling of Wayne’s own origin story. Show both side by side.
As for the riddler: Neil Patrick Harris anyone?
I honestly thought Waltz as The Joker would be the standout of the list. I mean he’s the featured shot and everything.
But then you suggested Stanley Tucci…and you had that photo of him sitting there…and my jaw dropped with correctness. I’ve been making my way through Arkham City at the moment, and that just makes so much sense to me.
Great list!
NO. NOT THE ROCK.
Cool list.
Poison Ivy – Jessica Chastain
(look up a pic of her with green shirt in the W magazine)
The Rock is too big to play Deathstroke, but he could be great for Killer Croc.
While I love Waltz (and I mean LOVE WALTZ), I’m not sure about the Joker suggestion.
The two that I do absolutely agree with are Law as Hush and Redmayne as Red Hood. Redmayne, in particular, could really emote and bring out the hatred and animosity as Red Hood/Jason Todd. Plus, he was really the only standout in Les Mis, imho.
Waltz is a great shout, how have we not thought of this before?
Tucci as Strange… Probably good enough. Toby Jones as Penguin? Now that’s something! I agree with NPH as The Riddler too anyway. Waltz as Joker I think… Somewhat strange. I mean, I know that dude’s frickin amazing as an actor, but as Joker…? He didn’t have the face for it. Just sayin’. It’s an amazing list though.
i always said bob hoskins would be perfect for the penguin, edward norton for the riddler, the rock for bane, hugh jackman for two face, jude law for black mask, john lithgow for the ventriloquist…
o and joe pesci as scarface
….mark strong as ras al ghul
I want the Joker, Deathstroke(The Rock), Idris Ilba as a villian and action figure and vehicle toys.
