Batman V Superman: 5 Moments From The Comic-Con Trailer (That Will Suck In The Film)

5. Retconning Bruce Wayne Into Man Of Steel's Ending

Man Of Steel was pretty overt in its disconnect from a wider universe. There were a couple of Batman Easter eggs (although their design hearkended back to Burton and Nolan's eras), but otherwise there was none of the background world-building that Marvel has become so famous for. That's a fine enough approach (in theory it allows a filmmaker to focus on the movie at hand rather than getting obsessed with the future, The Amazing Spider-Man style), but there's then some issues with the mass expansion of the sequel. How do you make the sudden long-term presence of Batman stick and believably link him into the plot? Well, apparently the best solution Snyder and co. could up with was to throw in a flashback sequence that shows he was there the whole time, just slightly out of shot getting a bit irritated. You need to give Bruce Wayne some stakes in the fight, but do they need to be so cack-handedly meshed into the universe? According to Snyder at the SDCC panel itself, Gotham is a twin city to Metropolis, a less-affluent equivalent just across the bay. That's a nice way to make the arrival of Superman a bit more impactful to Bruce (and explains why he'd be in Metropolis without contrivance), but is awfully convenient in terms of sequel expansion.
