Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice - 8 Problems With The Established Universe

7. Why So Serious?

While it may be a sensible idea for DC and Warner Bros. to make their shared cinematic universe as different as possible from their longtime rivals and competitors at Marvel, the rumours that circulated last year of the studio implementing a 'no jokes' policy on their projects ironically seemed laughable. It seems highly unlikely that such a mandate would be handed down to the filmmakers, but based on what we've seen so far the DC Cinematic Universe could end up taking itself far too seriously.

Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel was sorely lacking in levity, with a relentlessly bleak tone that made the majority of the characters come off as cold and one-dimensional. Similarly, the recently-released Dawn of Justice trailer was cloaked in darkness and full of ominous dialogue, while Suicide Squad director David Ayer's filmography to date isn't exactly renowned for belly laughs.

Marvel Studios' movies are known for their one-liners, visual gags and playful tone, so obviously DC are wisely going to avoid such similarities, but the studio could really paint themselves into a corner if their output gains a reputation for being too serious. After all, could you imagine how the likes of Aquaman, The Flash or Shazam will turn out if they're played completely straight?

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
