Blade Runner 2049: Sounds Like Jared Leto Is Going Weird Again

CinemaCon footage reveals a creepy replicant maker with a daddy complex. Obviously.

Just when you thought Jared Leto might have got all of the weird out of his system with Suicide Squad, the CinemaCon footage of his next film Blade Runner 2019 makes it sound an awful lot like he's still in his mad phase.

The film was a big part of Sony's presentation at the event, and was very warmly received, with praise for the look of the film (obviously, look at the director), and more of a look at the updated world it's set in. Ryan Gosling was in situ to unveil the footage, showing off apocalyptic visions of Los Angeles and Las Vegas "filled with snow, dust storms, and dazed looking androids" studded with visual callbacks to the first film.

And the most eye-catching element in all of the descriptions is definitely the way Leto's character is being framed.

Here's the description of the footage from Variety:

"The new footage showed more of Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard and Gosling’s Officer K, as well as a creepy look at Jared Leto, playing a manufacturer of replicants with a daddy complex. In one shot, Leto lovingly caresses a naked android, who appears to have been doused in amniotic fluid."

Wonderful, he's now a robo-pervert on top of Joker juggalo. At least we know he's more than capable of doing the weird bits well, and with a more restrained director that might translate into a more coherent performance.

Variety also say the footage included shots of "a bloodied, haunted-looking Gosling and de Armas as a skittish replicant who appears to have captured his heart" and that it received loud applause from the guests. All sounds very exciting.
