Cannes 2011: Reactions to THE ARTIST

Premiering this morning at the Cannes Film Festival was the Michel Hazanavicius silent, black-and-white, film The Artist. Yesterday saw the first official trailer released for the movie, which generated a huge amount of buzz ahead of the 8.30am premiere. And it did not disappoint. Obsessed With Film's Matt Holmes will be reviewing the movie later today, but here are just a selection of the instant reactions coming out of the screening.
@ultraculture -€Ž Absolutely loved The Artist. Probably my favourite film so far at Cannes. I'm still humming the soundtrack. @totalfilm - The Artist: silent-movie pastiche charmer, strong contender for the Palm D'og. @SiTheMovieGuy€Ž - Absolutely adored The Artist. #Cannes @rejectnation @wbpictures can think themselves very very proud @peterhowellfilm€Ž - The Artist: Very smart and entertaining, silent film conceit doesn't overwhelm emotion -- plus sure-fire winner of Palme Dog @picturehouses - Just seen one of the best films of the festival, The Artist a funny and sincere look back to silent cinema
The movie is almost certain to attract a huge amount of both critical acclaim and recognition come awards season, but one can't help but think that the movie will still lack the mass-market appeal it needs to succeed at the box office. Though there is little doubt that it is destined to be a cult-classic. The movie will be distributed by the Weinstein company after they acquired the rights for the movie earlier this week in Cannes.
