Captain Marvel Prequel Will Explain An Avengers: Infinity War Scene

A life or death mission?!

There's a question in Avengers: Infinity War that you might not even have noticed and it could be a big part of the lore establishing how Captain Marvel and the end of the Russos' explosive ensemble fit together.

That question is exactly what Nick Fury - who had been so heavily embedded underground that he hadn't appeared for any of the events of Civil War - and SHIELD head Maria Hill were up to when we met them in the post-credits scene. And more importantly how they came together in the first place.

Here's the fateful scene...

Clearly, the pair are tracking the Avengers in the wake of Thanos' attack on New York and have the capabilities to monitor satellites - so there's confirmation of sorts that a version of Fury's SHIELD is indeed still operating under Hill - despite the complications of HYDRA's infiltration and the government taking over superhero concerns with the Sokovia Accords.

By the look of it, this scene confirms that Fury and Hill are on a mission at the end of Avengers: Infinity War - perhaps to find out the whereabouts of the missing Avengers. There's also a fairly major hint that Tony Stark is still in contact with Hill and Fury (given that mention of "word from Stark" in there), which suggests that his commitment to the Sokovia Accords and doing everything above board isn't entirely concrete anymore. If it were, he absolutely wouldn't be working with Fury who is still presumed to be dead and who is operating outside of the remit of the Accords.

Sure, he's not a superhero, but he's as close to being one as is possible without being a fully-fledged Avenger and it confuses Stark's allegiances even more.

Hopefully, we might have an answer to those questions soon, because Marvel are releasing a Captain Marvel prelude comic that will link the post-credits scene to Captain Marvel. We already know that Hill and Fury have established links to Marvel in the 90s (well, Fury at least), but it seems their final scene together will link to Marvel's solo outing.

Here's the official solicitations from the comic:

"Before CAROL DANVERS takes flight in 2019’s first Marvel Studios film, immerse yourself in this all-new adventure! Spinning out of the mysterious events of Avengers: Infinity War, NICK FURY and MARIA HILL set off on life-or-death missions that lead directly to the appearance of CAPTAIN MARVEL!"

Those life or death missions are the most intriguing element here, as it presumably means they were doing more than merely responding to Thanos' attacks. And that makes the prelude comic essential reading for both Infinity War fans and Captain Marvel ones.
