10. All Your Base Are Belong To Us

The idea of memes on the Internet now is like second nature. For some people, it's genuinely a job, which must baffle those early net users who posted funny things harmlessly without any idea that people would come to obsess over them.

Brilliantly, the Captain Marvel site includes a couple of first generation memes. The first is Roy_T's mention of "all your base are belong to us" - a meme that grew out of a poor translation in the MegaDrive port of Zero Wing. Though it happened in 1992, the meme didn't kick off until the early 2000s, so it's not really right to have the reference on a 90s website, but let's forgive them of that.

Interestingly, Zero Wing is about an alien invasion and the need to liberate Earth, so it's not just an accidental reference either.

There's also mention of the dancing baby, which early Internet users will remember as a nod to this nightmarish character...
