David Cronenberg directs Denzel in Ludlum thriller

David Cronenberg's recent move into psychological character piece thrillers with the excellent HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and EASTERN PROMISES has seen him enter talks with MGM for their high profilethriller THE MATARESE CIRCLE. Adapted from a Non-BOURNE Robert Ludlum novel, the movie has Denzel Washington set to star in the two lead picture. The movie set against the backdrop of the Cold War follows one American and one Soviet who must team together in order to stop a plot to topple the world's governments. Washington will play the American and last month I suggested Viggo Mortensen for the Russian. The suggestion very much still stands, though one wonders if Mortensen would go to that well with Cronenberg again, even if it did win him an Oscar nom last time around. Adapted by the ever busy writers of WANTED and 3:10 TO YUMA, the film will begin shooting in the Spring and could be Cronenberg's most commercial vehicle yet. source - variety
