Matt Reeves has given an update on his upcoming Batman movie, confirming that its working title is indeed The Batman, and that it's most likely going to release in 2021.

Although it's been in development for some time, word on the film has been hard to come by for the most part. Last week, however, a production report suggested that The Batman wouldn't actually be called that at all. Reeves, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, has confirmed that is still the title for now, although it probably won't be what it's called when it hits cinemas:

"Right now it’s called The Batman. What it will be called ultimately, I don’t know."

Reeves also revealed that the casting process for the film will begin shortly, with the director wanting to take another pass at the script before firming up a move into production. There's still no news on just who will don the cape-and-cowl, but Reeves did comment on when we might be able to see the film:

"We haven't been dated. I wouldn't commit to this, but we're thinking the movie would probably be for 2021, late spring or summer. Warner Bros. has been incredibly supportive and given me a lot of time and shared the same passion that I do for this story."

Given the movie isn't likely to start shooting until late-2019, a 2021 release date makes sense, and fits with Warner Bros giving their tentpole projects plenty of breathing space to get things right. Wonder Woman 1984 was pushed back to June 2020, while Fantastic Beasts 3 is also looking like being delayed, but it's no bad thing if it means getting things better, especially given how they've rushed things previously.

Reeves didn't have much new to offer with regards to the story, which we've already heard will focus more on the detective aspect of the character, but he did reinforce that point, saying:

"It's very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It's told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it's going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It's more Batman in his detective mode than we've seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He's supposed to be the world's greatest detective, and that's not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I'd love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime."
