The controversy surrounding Disney's decision to fire James Gunn from Guardians 3 has now entered its third week, and it looks as though it's not going to go away anytime soon.
The director was removed from the project after old Tweets resurfaced as a part of a politically motivated campaign to discredit him, and in the wake of the entire Guardians family having broken their silence in an attempt to force Disney to reverse their decision, new reports have emerged that the studio could look to bring Gunn back into the fold.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, stories of Gunn's script for Guardians being tossed out the window are wide of the mark. The article also states that Gunn is being coveted by countless other studios, and has been "approached by several top producers and executives dangling big film projects." This should (you'd think), probably force Disney to reconsider their decision, and it turns out that may indeed be the case.
The same report quotes but one anonymous executive out of an apparent dozen as saying that they'd "work with him in a heartbeat," but it is understood that discussions can't be made while Gunn is still negotiating with Disney. Said discussions could result in Gunn being given a payout of up to $10 million, with Disney also apparently keen to keep his script for the third entry in the Guardians series.
Most interesting of all, however, is that the report also mentions that "two sources say there is a hope through the talks that Gunn could return in some fashion," potentially for a brand new Marvel movie.
So basically the current situation is that... anything could happen, really. It was long presumed that Gunn wouldn't be short of suitors, and with Disney undoubtedly aware of that, it's easy to see why they could look to ensure they don't burn their bridges beyond repair.
