Does Into The Spider-Verse Include Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man?

Are these just Spider-Man Easter eggs, or a return to Sam Raimi's trilogy?

The new trailer for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse has been released, giving us our best look yet at what is shaping up to be the superior Spidey-related film Sony put out this year.

The trailer introduces us to number of versions of Spider-Man to go alongside lead Miles Morales, including Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Gwen, SP//dr, and Spider-Ham. As well as those, however, there is, of course, Peter Parker, although this take on the iconic character is an older, wearier version, played with perfect downbeat style by Jake Johnson.

He's actually the trailer's focus in the opening 15 seconds or so, with a montage that flashes through his life as Spider-Man, and it's one that looks very familiar: there's him stopping a speeding train with his webbing, the upside-down kiss with Mary Jane, and him saving MJ as a car crashes through the window of the coffee shop they're in. The last one is slightly tweaked, but they're all iconic moments of Sam Raimi's trilogy of movies.

Add in Peter in this trailer saying “I saved the city, then I fell in love, then I saved the city. Again, and again, and again" and you've got a Spider-Man who has been doing this for a fairly long period of time, and is now worn out by it all, but at the same time is ready to play mentor to the young Miles.

That's very much in character for the Peter Parker played by Tobey Maguire, and although they could just be Easter eggs, there's enough there (especially as this is about a multiverse of Spider-Men) that this version, despite being voiced by Johnson, actually IS the very same one from those movies. It fits with the timeline and the world they've built, and is an easy way of subtly continuing his story after it prematurely ended with Spider-Man 3.
