3. It Has The Stamp of Approval From John Wagner
According to Judge Dredd creator John Wagner, the problem with the original 1995 movie was that “(the filmmakers) told the wrong story”. His feelings about 2012’s reboot however are worlds apart. In an interview with Hero Complex, Wagner had this to say:
“The plot is about Dredd and his world. I like the actors, they’re well cast
and they handled their parts well … Karl Urban will not remove his helmet
and will not kiss his co-star”
So if Mr Wagner can be that chuffed with the way his baby has been adapted by Hollyweird then the legions and legions of fans can rest easy that they too will not be disappointed. The trailer has been met with a mixed reaction but let’s face it, we’ve only seen a few minutes – the final product will be very different.
4. A Strontium Dog Movie Could Follow
OK, so this bit is only conjecture and not a set in stone fact, but there are visual clues in the trailer that suggest there may be more 2000AD favourites adapted into movies sooner or later. The primary clue is the name STERNHAMMER written on the side of one of the massive tower blocks housing Mega City One’s lowlife populace. If you’re new to Dredd then that name probably doesn’t mean anything to you, but for those in the know it is a reference to the Viking sidekick of Johnny Alpha – and that is really exciting. On top of this there is a strong likelihood of Dredd sequels. 2000AD overload.
So there you have it folks – 4 bonafide reasons to be excited about the upcoming Dredd movie, and if you’re not chomping at the bit to see Karl Urban and his Lawmaster tackle ‘Ma-Ma’ and her boys then you deserve to be exiled to Cursed Earth.

Besides the whole helmet dealio, point three is probably the most important thing. He was actually a lot more positive on his internet Facebook page (I think anyway):
“I went up to London yesterday to see the completed Dredd film. I’ve had reservations about certain aspects of it, and made them plain to the team at DNA. All but one of them – a little quibble at the beginning – have been addressed. And what a lot they’ve added. Music is on the button. SFX are excellent. Filming is impressive. I’ve not seen a modern 3-D movie before but I like it. I found myself reaching out trying to touch things that were dancing before my eyes. Karl is a great Dredd and Olivia gets Anderson completely. This is Dredd as it should be done – true to character, visceral, unrelentingly violent (but not off-puttingly so). It will open, I believe, sometime in September. No doubt you’ll let me know what you think when you’ve seen it, but this has my recommendation.”

Dredd is NOT a Hollywood film. It’s a British independent. That’s why we have to support it.
