Emma Stone Is The Femme Fatale In TALES FROM THE GANGSTER SQUAD!
She will play the love interest caught in a triangle between Sean Penn's mob boss Mickey Cohen and Ryan Gosling, the man tasked with bringing him to justice in Warner Bros' gangster epic!
Just when you thought the cast of Warner Bros’ crime epic Tales From The Gangster Squad couldn’t get any better (actually it could… Bryan Cranston could find it in his schedule to appear but that ship looks to have sailed)… they add one of the more exciting young female talents working today to it.
Variety say Emma Stone is just dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s away from a role in the Public Enemies-esque gangster flick where she would play Jean, a femme fatale blabbermouth who is in the middle of a love triangle between Sean Penn’s mob boss Mickey Cohen and the man who is tasked with taking him down, Ryan Gosling. It’s typical film noir/gangster material and the kind of sub-plot that was so rife in the heydey of the genre where Jimmy Cagney, Edward G. Robinson and Humphrey Bogart were running loose!
Incidentally Stone and Gosling feature together in the rom-com Crazy Stupid Love that opens in the U.S. on Friday.
Already in the cast are Josh Brolin, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Pena and Holt McCallany and as you will know by now the film is based on Paul Lieberman’s series of 2008 articles in the L.A. Times concerning the ‘off-the-record’ and questionable L.A.P.D. of the 1940′s and their influence from the East Coast Mafia. To us we’ve always described it as L.A. Confidential meets Public Enemies and the film is actually based on a much lauded screenplay by former LA cop turned crime novelist Will Beall.
Zombieland helmer Ruben Fleischer directs, hoping to bring the energy he showed from his zom-comedy into the rat-at-tat genre.
Cohen was of course a notorious muscle man for Capone, an infamous figure Warner Bros are also trying to convince director David Yates and star Tom Hardy to collaborate on a Godfather-sized trilogy of the tax evading criminal. Warner Bros are clearly trying to recapture their gangster roots and doesn’t it sound cool?
Filming on Tales From The Gangster Squad is imminent. Oh and P.S. - of course I can get away with posting the pinup Emma Stone Vanity Fair cover issue!! She is kind of period femme fatale-ish in that image, so it fits. Kind of.
