Ok, ok, so I'm stretching with this article being linked to movies for Obsessed With Film but it's the World Cup after all, it's bigger than movies. In just over an hours hence, Oscar winning actress Charlize Theron (there's the link, ya see!) will host the drawing of the group stages for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. world-cup-2010-logoOver 200 million people in more than 200 territories are expected to watch today's ceremony. Wow! Before all that, Nelson Mandela will give a little speech to the world, which is a nice bit of free and unasked for publicty for the Clint Eastwood directed Mandela biopic Invictus.

Here's the schedule of events according to the BBC and yes, like all ceremonies it will be long and drawn out so the vast travelling everyone has done to get there is masked as being slightly more worthwhile than it really is...

1700: Fifa's opening sequence, followed by a warm welcome from the top of Table Mountain. 1705: Message from Nelson Mandela. 1716: Trophy hand over. 1742: The official match ball is revealed. 1755: The draw is scheduled to begin. 1823: End of draw, followed by analysis. The BBC have a pretty good preview article write-up which includes a piece where they asked a maths professor to come up with the odds of England being drawn in the Group of Death, which they call Portugal (or presumably France too), USA and Ivory Coast as being; 1/8 x 1/8 x 3/5 x 1/5 = 3/1600: about 1 chance in 530 There's also a chance that England will draw the exact same group they had when they won the trophy for the only time way back in 1966... France, Uruguary and Mexico. Though historical significance aside, that would be an horrendous group for England. The hope is we get a New Zealand, Slovakia and Algeria, though a bloody battle with France to try and avenge what they did to Ireland would be welcome in these parts...

And at the end of the day, England vs. France/Portugal etc, are awesome matches to watch.
