Evan's "Almighty" high budget

18616956.jpgEvan Almighty, the suprise sequel to the Jim Carrey star vehicle Bruce Almighty has seen it's budget $160 million, with estimates showing it could top $200 million on completion. How on earth did they manage to spend that much money on a comedy like that..... surely Morgan Freeman's salary wasn't that high to bring him back!!! The figures will make the movie the most expensive comedy ever made and once it's done will probably exceed the budget of the summer blockbuster X-Men 3: The Last Stand ($210 million). The studio had initally given a budget of $140 million to the sequel (which was quite generous in it's own right). The plot of the movie this time involves the character of Evan (news guy in the first movie humilated by Bruce) who manages to get himself elected into congress when he meets God (Freeman) who commands him to build an ark. Evan will again be played by the now mainstream Steve Carell. Bruce Almighty back in 2003 made a very impressive $250 million on a budget of $78 million. I really can't see this sequel, no matter how popular Steve Carell has become, matching anywhere near that type of number. The first movie was so succesful because of the star power of Jim Carrey and Jennifer Aniston, and without them I can only see failure for this movie. Somebody somewhere has messed up with the budget big time. I will be the first to admit i'm wrong next July, but there is no way in hell this movie is going to make a profit. source - la times, dark horizons
