Villeneuve's 1998 debut feature was Canada's Best Foreign Film entry for that year's Oscars, and though it didn't make the cut, it is nevertheless early proof of the director's distinct eye for visuals, even in a relatively low-key romantic drama.

Pascale Bussières and Alexis Martin are fantastic as two friends who decide to head into the desert to conceive a baby together, and as you can imagine, that arrangement quickly becomes complicated.

Wryly funny while offering up plenty of human insight, August 32nd on Earth may not be the most exciting or well-paced film in the director's filmography, but that early promise is unquestionably there, and the excellent chemistry between the two leads is especially potent.
