8. Punisher: War Zone

For a long while, it looked like Punisher: War Zone was going to be as good as it got for Punisher fans looking for a screen adaptation. Ultimately, Netflix changed that and "rescued" the character from the doldrums, but it's slightly unfair to believe the narrative that there was nothing good about the three previous Punisher adaptations, because War Zone realky does have its moments.

After the 2004 Punisher failed to kick-start a franchise, the decision was made to bring him in under the Marvel Knights film banner, which lasted all of two films (Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance being the other), with the conscious agenda to be cooler and darker.

It's closer to the source material than the others (and actually isn't that far from the Netflix show's aesthetic), but the fetishistic approach to violence is a little much and it's all a little too serious. But at least Ray Stevenson is great in the lead.
