Fantastic Beasts 2 Will Go In A Different Direction

David Yates promises a "very interesting development."

Even with just over four months before the first Harry Potter spin-off even hits cinemas, the question of what comes next has got a hell of a lot more interesting with the news that Warner Bros have registered a movie trademark for The Cursed Child.

If that is going to happen - and it does seem to be the case since the laws of trademarks state you can't just frivolously register things with no intent to use them - we'll probably have to wait until after 2020. Until then, we've got three Fantastic Beasts movies in total to look forward to, which is still extremely exciting if you're a fan of the Wizarding World.

Now, thanks to David Yates we've got some indication of what at least one of the two Fantastic Beasts sequels will look like. Well, a tease anyway...

“We’ve seen the script for Part 2, for the second movie, which takes the story in a whole new direction – as you should, you don’t want to repeat yourself. The second movie introduces new characters as she builds this part of the Harry Potter universe further. It’s a very interesting development from where we start out. The work is pouring out of her.”

Yates wouldn't be drawn on whether the sequel will be set in America, but you probably wouldn't put it past Rowling to do that. She's already crafting a rich lore for the American wizarding world an it would be strange for her to then abandon it to either go straight back to England or to go somewhere else entirely.

Saying that though, I would love to see a Fantastic Beasts movie set somewhere exotic that would allow for a more Indiana Jones meets Harry Potter sort of feel. Not that Newt Scamander immediately seems to fit that sort of mould just yet...
