A new trailer for the next James Bond film Skyfall has unveiled at Comic Con this week. The trailer reportedly revealed plot details regarding the disappearance of a disk drive containing the names and locations of every British Intelligence Agent, for which Judi Dench’s M was responsible. The trailer also gave us our first look at the return of the gadget maestro Q, now played by a young wippersnapper.
Q is one of the most iconic and beloved characters in the Bond universe. Desmond Llewelyn played the role from 1963′s From Russia With Love to 1999′s The World is Not Enough. After Llewelyn’s death in 1999, John Cleese took over the role in 2002′s Die Another Day. When the franchise was rebooted with 2006′s Casino Royale, in an attempt to give the Bond universe a more realistic feel, Q was absent. He was also nowhere to be found in 2008′s Quantum of Solace but the character is making a reappearance in the next Bond film, Skyfall. Several months ago actor Ben Whishaw was announced for the role and now we have the first look at the character.
What’s interesting about this incarnation of Q is that he’s significantly younger than the previous actors who’ve played the part. Whishaw’s wardrobe also suggests a more bookish Q. It’ll be interesting to see how Q’s youth will effect his relationship with Bond. Will Bond not take him as seriously since he is almost as old enough to be his dad? The picture suggests Bond isn’t really interested in what Q has to tell him but then that’s possibly not something that is new!
It also remains to be seen how big a part gadgets will play in this film. The filmmakers may still be trying to keep things grounded, something more along the lines of the dynamic Morgan Freeman’s Lucius Fox and Christian Bale’s Batman share in The Dark Knight Rises.
