Gambit: 4 Reasons It Could Be Awesome (And 4 Why It Could Suck)

Channing Tatum's Gambit finally has a director, but that doesn't mean we should start getting excited just yet.

After a fairly turbulent few months in which its very production was put in doubt several times, it looks like 20th Century Fox is finally gearing up to begin work on their long-mooted solo film for the X-Man Gambit with star Channing Tatum and director Doug Liman. The card throwing cajun first cropped up onscreen in the best-forgotten X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where he was played pretty decently by True Detective star Taylor Kitsch. Now though, Fox is looking to more fully exploit its mutant universe with a series of spin-offs and solo movies, with Gambit due to land in 2016 after both Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse have taken a run at challenging the MCU's box office domination. Banking on a fan favourite character like Gambit is a bit of a risk for the higher-ups at Fox, particularly seeing as how this version won't be seen as part of the core X-Men team prior to being granted his own adventure. And let's not forget that the last time he popped up was in Origins: Wolverine, a film so bad that not even the brutal murder of Will.I.Am could save it. If it works though it could be just the sort of swaggering hit Fox needs to help forget about the Fantastic Four's box office bellyflop. It's still too early to call at this stage, so here are four reasons why Gambit could be awesome and four why it could suck.
