Ghostbusters 3: 7 Big News Revelations About 2020's Upcoming Sequel

There's something strange in the neighbourhood (AGAIN)...

After the much-hyped, much-trolled 2016 Ghostbusters reboot underwhelmed at the box office, it looked like the plans to continue the 'Bustin' franchise into multiple spin-offs and animated projects might have hit the skids. There may have been some rumours of cogs still turning, but everything went a bit quiet, with the expected sequel, a new male team spin-off and an animated movie all quietly put on ice.

But then Ecto-1 purred into life unexpectedly and a new sequel was announced as having been in pre-production for some time under the working title of Rust City. Far more Judge Dredd than Ghostbusters, but it clearly worked to throw us all off the scent.

The announcement came completely out of the blue, and there was even an announce trailer to quickly follow...

Talk about dialling up the hype. From that point, Sony have mostly left us to whip up the excitement all on our own, but there have been some choice reveals in the past weeks that have made this one of 2020's most exciting movies already...

Anyone hoping to see more of the 2016 timeline starring the new female Ghostbusting team and Chris Hemsworth's high-functioning moron will be sadly disappointed, because Ghostbusters 2020 is very much going to be Ghostbusters 3 as the director announced at the time of the film's reveal to EW:

“I have so much respect for what Paul [Feig] created with those brilliant actresses, and would love to see more stories from them. However, this new movie will follow the trajectory of the original film."

Considering the success of the Ghostbusters video game that was released back in 2009 and followed the original timeline, it's a smart move to focus on the original team, though it does come with some caveats.

It's also interesting to note that Jason Reitman told Bill Burr on his podcast that he inteded to "reclaim" the property:

‘We are, in every way, trying to go back to the original technique and hand the movie back to the fans.’

Naturally, this caused a fair amount of offence, as it seemed to suggest that the reboot wasn't for Ghostbusters fans (Reitman has since walked the statement back), but it would be foolish to ignore the fact that Sony absolutely will target their marketing towards the old fans. And there's absolutely an element of those fans who turned away from the reboot for its perceived abandonment of the "core values" of the franchise. They'll no doubt ne delighted to be "welcomed back."
