Gladiator 2 Is ACTUALLY Happening

The follow up to the 2000 Oscar Winner has just been announced.

Gladiator Russell Crowe

As announced on Deadline, the sequel to 2000 movie Gladiator has been recently been confirmed by Ridley Scott to be in the works. Whilst there's no real details on story yet, we do know that Russell Crowe's Maximus won't be making an appearance - at least, unless it's from the afterlife.

In Gladiator, Maximus meets his heroic end at the close of the first film. Gladiator 2 has been reported to be the story of Lucilla's son Lucius, also the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus, though what he'll be getting up to is yet to be revealed. He's the boy saved by Maximus from his conniving uncle, and will presumably be all grown up in this continuation of the Gladiator tale.

With Scott back in the driving seat for one of his most prolific movies, it's Peter Craig that will be joining him to pen the script. His credits include two Hunger Games movies and the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick, so should be an excellent choice to take on the enormity of Gladiator's followup.

The world of skirts and sandals is soon to be back with us again, and one can only hope it's as fantastic as the original film that was nominated for 11 Oscars, winning five in the process. Whilst the genre was revisited by Scott with the markedly less impressive Exodus: Gods and Kings in 2014, we're just going to say that was a practise run. The real good stuff is yet to come.

We'll keep you updated as more information is released.
