As the calendar creeps quickly towards Christmas Day on the 25th of December, we’re counting down the days with a special advent calendar of festive films, revealing a set of rare images for each chosen film to surprise and delight film fans.
When it comes to classic Christmas films, you might not expect a film about vicious little creatures terrorising a small American town to constantly appear in top ten lists of movie buffs’ favourite festive offerings. However, that all changed when Joe Dante and Steven Spielberg combined to create their masterpiece, Gremlins.
Few films are loved by so many, but then with its festive setting, dark humour and a cute little furry thing at its heart, what is there not to like?
Gremlins tells the story of Billy Peltzer, who receives the unusual Christmas present of a Mogwai named Gizmo, from his father – a slightly irregular pet and comes with some now infamous rules: Don’t get him wet, don’t expose him to sunlight and never feed him after midnight.
When Billy fails to adhere to the rules his town is soon overrun by the little green gremlins and it takes nothing short of a miracle to bring an end to the madness – with a little help from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in a genius scene inside the town cinema. If you have seen the film, you know the scene, if you haven’t then you really need to see this film.
Here are our favourite rare images that you have never seen from this brilliant Christmax gem.
