grindhouse.jpgThe continuing saga of Grindhouse’s UK release has taken another turn. Variety are confirming that Harvey Weinstein has decided that the best way to release the movie in the U.K. would be to split it up and release both Planet Terror and Death Proof as seperate features.

This is what the guy said about the splitting up of the movies…

“Based on U.S. audience’s positive reactions to Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Death Proof’ and Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Planet Terror,’ combined with their resistance to the three-hour running time, we’ve revised our U.K. release plans to allow audiences the chance to see the films separately, like they will be shown in all international territories,”

I know this move REALLY, REALLY, REALLY sucks for us here in the U.K. and I would be especially pissed if I hadn’t seen it already but we all knew it was coming and can we really blame them for trying to make as much money as they can with the features?

As of this weekend, the movie is just about running dry in theatres. It’s currently at 20th place in the box office charts, taking only $23.8 million on a $67 million budget!! Clearly it wasn’t the Easter weekend, or the amount of screenings (on it’s second week when I was in the U.S. it was the most screened and advertised movie at the theatre) it’s that the concept hasn’t worked this time around.

If you were Weinstein, would you really do it any differently?

Death Proof will be released by Momentum on September 21st but there is currently no release date set for Planet Terror. By then, is anyone really going to care?
