Guardians Of The Galaxy Spoilers: 10 Ways It Sets Up Future Marvel Films

10. Better Soundtracks

Computer effects, creator cameos, dense continuity references, Robert Downey Jr making wisecracks: these are all important things in the construction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. An element of the filmmaking process that often gets overlooked in these big budget superhero flicks, however, is the music. It makes sense in the likes of the Thor films, where anything but the soaring strings of a fantasy epic would be totally out of place; similarly Avengers sticks with the standard orchestral action movie score, which is smart, because otherwise you might get distracted from all the fun little jokes. Like the guy playing Galaga. Remember that? Still, for a set of movies that are so intricately constructed in the way the Marvel ones are, you'd think a little more attention would be paid toward the soundtracks. We've had steps in the right direction with Iron Man 2's all AC/DC score (although that one's more for the dads) and the surprising opening of the third film (there's something inspired about subjecting a full cinema of people to Eiffel 65), but Guardians Of The Galaxy really goes full Tarantino on us. Like the undisputed master of movie soundtracks it looks like James Gunn has raided his own record collection to put together the soundtrack for his first Marvel film, diegetically presented as an "awesome mixtape" hero Peter Quill listens to on his rad eighties Walkman. Hopefully a superhero film scored by David Bowie, 10CC and the Jackson 5 is something we can hope for more of in the future.
