Guardians Of The Galaxy Trailer: 5 Things We Learned

5. Heavy On Humor

"They call themselves the Guardians of the Galaxy" "What a bunch of a-holes."
This trailer is 90% humor, 10% action montage. It opens with Chris Pratt trying to convince a very evil-looking Djimon Hounsou (who plays one of the film's villains, Korath the Pursuer) that he's Star-Lord, "the legendary outlaw," who Korath - of course - has never heard of. Then the majority of the trailer contains Blue Swede's classic 1974 song, "Hooked On A Feeling," which gives it a very upbeat, funky feel. John C. Reilly is also given a lot of spotlight; he plays Rhomann Dey, a high-ranking officer in the intergalactic police force called the Nova Corps. He introduces us to each of the Guardians, explaining their rap sheets to his fellow officers. He's an interesting choice for a film like this, and we'll have to see how successfully he can pull off the role without standing out too much because of his recognizable voice, demeanor, and past work. The humor is definitely something Marvel is trying to market in order to catch the attention of casual movie-goers, who may not initially be sold on the idea of a film with a talking raccoon and walking tree-man. Of course, the trailer consisted of plenty of quick action shots, showing there will be a lot of brutal hand-to-hand combat, sword fighting, aerial battles, and Rocket riding Groots shoulders while wielding a huge gun. So, though the trailer may be mostly about the jokes, that doesn't mean the film will be, and this could simply have been edited with the humor in mind in order to "sell" the initial concept before diving into the more science-fiction heavy themes.
