Not content with protecting the universe, Guardians of the Galaxy may soon be turning into an attraction at Disney's California Adventure Park.

However, this isn't some new ride they're getting, but rather taking over the great Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, which reportedlywill be re-themed to include the Marvel superteam.

The rumour first started circling around a month ago, and now MiceAge have confirmed the news, reporting:

"The plan is for the original Twilight Zone backstory to be removed entirely, and replaced with an all new show based around the Collector character from the Guardians movie franchise."

The report goes on to state that the current plan is to close Tower of Terror later this year, so that they can revamp the ride ahead of a May 2017 re-opening, which would tie it in with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

This is an understandable effort by Disney to capitalise more on the Marvel brand in their parks, and a step closer to a Marvel land. The Guardians don't quite have the broad appeal of the Avengers, but they are a fun set of characters. Quite why they're focusing on the Collector though, given he won't be in the sequel, is unclear.

It is also disappointing to see such an iconic ride being replaced, and a surprise given its continued popularity. With the attraction still standing at numerous other Disney parks, including Walt Disney World's Hollywood Studios, hopefully this isn't something they'll roll out globally.

What do you think of the decision to re-theme Tower of Terror? Let us know in the comments.
