The Harry Potter movies really went through a journey to reach the finale. What once started out as the family friendly, somewhat younger audience-orientated franchise changed markedly over the years. Everything flipped, with the franchise losing the light-hearted feel to it, being replaced with a sombre tone more suited to the graver stakes of the story.
Though there have been many visual changes, the main theme has remained consistent throughout the entire series. They are about the age-old tale of good vs evil, light vs dark, The Boy Who Lived vs the Dark Lord. And with Lord Voldemort in the ascendancy, it's inevitable that the tone of the final movies is particularly dark, but it was a satisfying, entertaining end to the franchise.
