Highlander Reboot: There Can Be Only One, Ryan Reynolds

In a casting coup likely to engage and infuriate in equal measure, it seems that wise cracking Canadian Ryan Reynolds is becoming immortal in the forthcoming reboot of Highlander. He is in talks with Summit Entertainment to take over the mangled accent of kilt wearing uber swordsman Connor McLeod, one of a dwindling breed of immortals who will ultimately be beheaded down to the last one standing in order to claim 'The Prize'. Coming from Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway and also Twilight: Breaking Dawn scribe Melissa Rosenberg. The film is the next from Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later, Intruders). Reynolds is certainly no slouch in the action man stakes and he showed he could swing a blade in the otherwise tepid X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but can he capture that animal, otherworldly-ness that Christopher Lambert showed in the original? True, part of Lambert's vague disconnection with his surroundings was down to the fact that he barely knew any English before taking on the role, but from past performance it's difficult to see Reynolds matching him in the man out of time stakes. I'm sure the Highlander fan base (there is one we assure you) will get pretty vociferous on the news, but in our mind surely the greatest worry will be who's going to play the Kurgan, and the best immortal of them all, Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez...
