Idris Elba Joins Guillermo del Toro's Monster Mash PACIFIC RIM

Earlier this month he tweeted about his imminent meeting with a controversial director, which was later confirmed to be the lead role in Django Unchained that we now know he lost out on to Jamie Foxx but the increasingly in-demand British actor's rise up the Hollywood ladder shows no signs of stopping down despite the rejection. Deadline say Elba has signed on to replace the previously attached Tom Cruise in Legendary Pictures' Guillermo Del Toro directed 2013 monster mash, Pacific Rim. The movie is centered around an alternate version of Earth in the near future decades after a historic date in November 2012 when the first towering Godzilla-like beast emerged from a hole in the Pacific Ocean and attacked the city of Osaka, Japan. Since the first attack, the rim has been €œspitting out€ a variety of gigantic monsters at an increasing rate, which then stride out of the ocean and begin destroying sea-bordering cities, like Tokyo and Los Angeles. In order to combat these monstrous, otherworldly menaces, the military developed the €œJaeger€ program, which trains teams of two pilots to jointly operate massive, building-sized mechanized suits of armor and high-tech weaponry. Elba joins a pair of Charlies on the cast, fellow Brit Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Charlie Day. Elba will play the commanding officer of Hunnam's character. Right now he Elba can be seen back on British tv screens in the second series of his detective drama Luther, and is currently filming Ridley Scott's 'Not an Alien Prequel' Prometheus and has yet another comic book role after The Losers and Thor in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance coming up in 2012.
