Is David Fincher back to his best with Zodiac?

10m.jpgIt's five years since David Fincher shocked everyone by making an average movie. The director who wowed audiences with two of the most critically acclaimed movies of the 90's with Se7en and Fight Club, along with the under-rated Michael Douglas/Sean Penn movie The Game was talked about as being the most talented director in Hollywood before Panic Room totally slowed down his momentum. He's taken a few years out and he has now returned to the crime genre that made him a household name with the cool looking Zodiac. The trailer kicked ass, the cast looks great, the story is intriguing but is it actually any good.... "Overlong and lacking dramatic focus, the film nevertheless captures the dark allure that the unsolved crimes had on the region over a 22-year period". - Kevin Crust, Los Angeles Times "David Fincher has achieved a new level of filmmaking to create a true crime thriller that's surprising in how thoroughly it reveals the facts and details of the case without ever being tedious or exploitative". - Edward Douglas, Comingsoon.net "The director has taken a depressing topic and used it as the basis for the most exhilarating movie so far this year". - Jim Hemphill, Reel.com "Fincher's best work since Se7en is a sprawling American masterpiece that combines epic-scale psychological thriller, suspenseful procedural policier, and poignant newsroom drama, with a splendid ensemble headed by Robert Downey in an Oscar-caliber turn". - Emmanuel Levy, Emmanuellevy.com "Zodiac is fascinating and engrossing and realistic and every bit as unsatisfying as real life and real police work often are". - Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel Zodiac's going down really well. Out of 115 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, only 15 are coming back negative, leaving Fincher's movie with a 87% fresh rating. The general consensus seems to be that the movie is good for those who can stomach slow-burners, but may ultimately leave some people unsatisfied with the conclusion. I can't wait to see this thing, but unfortunately I'm going to have to. Film doesn't come out until April 20th here in the U.K. source - rotten tomatoes
