5. Choosing The Voice

Many creatures of horror and other genres of film have their own voice which can make a role expand past the screen and into the ears and voices of fans and impersonators. Clowns are especially known for their articulation, with such characters as the Joker relying on their signature expressions to make, or break, their character.

Mark Hamill, Heath Ledger, and more have all gone to great lengths to perfectly encapsulate the voice of the Clown Prince of Crime. Similarly, Bill Skarsgard wanted to get the voice of the most feared clown of all just right.

To achieve the desired voice for Pennywise, Skarsgard spent time recording numerous takes and tries in order to nail down the screams, taunts, and laughs that he felt would best depict It. He would listen to these takes and adjust until he found the correct voice, practicing it while driving in his car to his audition for the film.

What he achieved was uniquely sinister: A friendly, seemingly harmless high pitched delivery that seemed welcoming, if not a bit creepy. However, the friendly tone would quickly devolve into the harsh, demonic shrieks of a deranged monster, destroying the illusionary childish words that were meant to lure in prey. Skarsgard's voice work helped Pennywise come to life in horrific fashion.
