IT Chapter 2 Set To Break R-Rated Movie Box Office Records?

Another mega-rich opening for Pennywise?

It Chapter 2
Warner Bros.

It's easy to forget just how incredibly successful the first IT was. Well, not the first one - the first part of Andy Muschietti's two-part remake, which is already vastly better than the miniseries that predated it.

It was one of the most popular horror movies ever and were it not for Deadpool, Jesus and an American Sniper, would be the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. That's some going for a creepy clown with a balloon and the sequel could well surpass all of that if early predictions are anything to go by.

Those projections suggest a domestic opening weekend box office range of somewhere between $110-$150 million, which would beat the first film's $123.4 million (BoxOfficePro actually puts the opening weekend at $136 million right now).

So we'd be looking at a record-breaking opening weekend for an R-rated movie and it would also be the biggest September opening ever - a record currently held by the first movie.

Hopefully, the film can deliver on all of that hype. The marketing so far suggests a strong follow-up and there has been talk recently of it surprising fans of the book, so we shall see.
