James Gunn Defends Spoiling The Identity Of Star-Lord's Father In Guardians Of The Galaxy 2

It's kinda your fault he had to reveal it.

For me, the biggest reveal to come out of SDCC was the reveal of the identity of Star-Lord's father in Guardians Of The Galaxy. Turns out that Kurt Russell is indeed Papa Quill, and that he's playing none other than Ego The Living Planet, a long rumoured addition to the MCU (who, in case you were worrying for his mother, can transform into a human).

And if you're wondering why I didn't write a spoiler warning before that major info drop, resolving an essential hanging thread from the original film almost a year before the sequel's release, that's because James Gunn's gone to Facebook and cited that it isn't really a spoiler. In a lengthy post where he breaks down the conflict of revealing plot points in advance, he cites how it was favourable to reveal it officially rather than "have it come out on SpoilersRUs.com in a few weeks."

I think that's totally fair, especially when those who have been bemoaning the reveal won't know how Ego fits into the story or even if it's that spoilerific - people were irate when the teams were revealed for Captain America: Civil War, but that became an essential part of the marketing. It's just a shame it's been motivated by spoiler sites, although that's something we've been seeing more and more of recently; look at how Doomsday became an essential part of Batman V Superman's marketing after a solid year of speculation (and Michael Shannon flubs). But I guess that's the world we live in.
