Jaws: 9 Easters Eggs You Never Noticed

1. The Shark Has Vocal Cords

Jaws: The Revenge received plenty of flak for its ludicrous plot, terrible effects and generally not being much good. One of the film’s most maligned elements is that the shark roars like a lion, which would be hard for an actual shark since they have no vocal cords to speak of. This is shark biology 101.

For such a maligned element, people seem to forget that Bruce has a few growly moments of his own throughout Jaws. His roars are a lot more subdued than those in The Revenge, but there are several distinct moments where he bellows in anger. Like when he pops out of the water and Quint spears him with another barrel, or when he breaks through the cabin of the sinking Orca to attack Brody.

These growls were probably added in post-production to give him a little more menace, and they’re subtle enough that they don’t cause distraction. But the next time someone complains about the roaring shark in Jaws: The Revenge it’s worth remembering that Spielberg got there first.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
