John Carpenter Is Making A New Halloween Movie

He's back!

Haloween Returns
Miramax

Normally, the announcement of a new addition to an already sprawling horror franchise is met with either a raised eyebrow or flat-out disdain. We've all been hurt before by reboots and straight to DVD sequels that suck the soul out of the originals, and it's been a long time since a new chapter in a horror franchise was actually any good.

But today, there's something to be excited about because John Carpenter is returning to make a new Halloween movie. Now, he's not directing - instead he will be executive producer - but you have to suspect that his involvement will be a positive thing for the movie.

Here's how the legendary director announced the news:

"38 years after the original Halloween. Im going to help to try to make the 10th sequel the scariest of them all.

A bold claim. Let's hope he'll take the franchise back to its roots, rather than following the distasteful trend of adopting whatever tropes and trends are hot in the horror genre currently. The fact that he's also joined by franchise veteran producer Malek Akkad should also be received positively.

The franchise has so far spawned nine sequels and almost $400 million, so it's obvious why Miramax would be drawn to releasing another. Let's just hope the tenth lives up to its milestone.

There's no release date yet, but the film is on the fast track and a Halloween 2017 release date does look quite likely.
