Just when you thought it was safe......

piranha.jpgI never knew there was a Jaws parody known as Piranha, which was directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins, Small Soldiers). Even more suprising for me is that the flick had a sequel that marked James Cameron's debut as a director. I guess it's because I thought the Jaws sequels themselves were pretty much parodies of Spielberg's classic. Anyway, Variety are confirming a story that ran yesterday at IESB, that Alexandre Aja who remade Wes Craven'sThe Hills Have Eyes... is signed up to direct a remake of Piranha. The movie is being described as a "stylized horror-comedy" and will probably only really be a remake in name, and more in line with Scary Movie as they attempt to parody the whole "shark-infested" waters genre. The film will be produced by Dimension Films, with Bob Weinstein giving us this... "We will maintain the fun and thrilling aspects of the original film but look forward to upping the ante with a modern-day twist" Now I haven't seen Piranha, but is it really possible to have a whole movie that is a comedy/parody about man-eating sharks? Aja promises style for the movie and who are we to doubt? Although I still haven't seen a frame of his work, it was pretty clear from trailers, reviews and posters that Haute Tension and The Hills Have Eyes were full of just that. source - iesb, coming soon, variety
